Mushroom Project for Members Living with Disabilities

The overall goal is to build capacity among the socially vulnerable community residents, especially disabled members, through empowerment, skill and technology transfer, for the sustainable use of waste and organic products as the basis for growing projects.

The objective is to build capacity among the socially vulnerable groups of the community, especially people with disabilities, through empowerment and essential skills and technology needed for the sustainable and responsible utilization of the material classified as waste to be used as the substrate for growing.

Capacity - Building Component

From the funds advance a training workshop for Mushroom Farming was held; from 24 November 2008 until 05 December 2008 to empower them with the skills of: 1. Preparation of culture 2. Preparation of spawn 3. Preparation of substrate Eleven disabled community members were trained. The skills were transferred and startup materials are also ready

Inclusiveness of people with disabilities.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

People with disabilities were previously marginalized, educationally and economically disadvantaged. A high unemployment rate as well as a low educational level is common amongst them in most part of the country. They are put in a situation that they don?t make their own choices and make them feel less privileged, such that it affects them psychologically. Otjozondjupa region has a high rate of people with disabilities, a total of 5159, whereby 2776 are females and 3143 are males. The 2001 Census of Otjiwarongo states that 567 are females and 581 are males. Lack of job opportunities in the rural areas results in migration to the urban areas in search of food, security and family support. This project will help to sustain their day to day living style and change them into productive citizens. A sustainable Mushroom Farming Project contributed to the economic independency of people with disabilities in Otjiwarongo

Project sustainability

The Namibian Mushroom Farming Project is the first of its kind which is managed by people with disability. This project did not only improve their living standard but it has also changed their household, through food, security and put them in a position to generate income and needed nutrition for their bodies. A sustainable Mushroom Farming Project contributed to the economic independency of people with disabilities in Otjiwarongo.

Notable Community Participation

The project deals with people with disabilities in Otjiwarongo, that includes the youth population. More than 38 children of these parents benefited from the project, after the completion of the project. Most of the members were educated like other community members, because they were physically able since birth, their disabilities has been resulted by certain circumstances which occurred in their lives
