Adaptation to climate change by small-scale Rooibos tea farmers in the Suid Bokkeveld area of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa

The project aims to support small-scale farmers in the project area in their efforts to adapt their farming practices to anticipate climate change to effectively support adaptation to climate change and sustainable resource use in the project area and elsewhere. This would be done by raising the awareness of farmers in the area about the changing climate and exploring the viability of cultivating Wild Rooibos as and adatation strategy. Since rural women are among the most vulnerable land users we will also create spcific activities for addressing their needs.

Project Characteristics and Results

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Indigo and SouthSouthNorth work in partnership with various organization in effort to sustain their work as well as to leverage more funds.

Gender Focus

Many small scale farmers in the area are consisted of a women , who are also involved in the project

Policy Impact

The SSN and Indigo will assist to inform the Climate Change and Mitigation strategy of the Country especially dur to the involvemnet of communities in the project as well as the sharing of information at with farmers, and at bothe national and international conferences.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The Suid Bokkeveld area has been identified as one of the hotspots , and thus through particpatory Action Research , the communities will be able to sustain their activities through the strategies learnt in the project.

Planning non gef grant

The climate change adaptation project activities will be expanded by the Climate Change Adaptation project supported by the Volkswagen Foundation and inplemented by a consortium of South African, Ethiopian and German Organizations

Project sustainability

The involvement of the community in this Participatory Action Research Project esnsures that the farmers continues to practice the adaptation strategies due to the lesson learnt.

Replication of project activities

The project activities will be replicated , sustained and continued in the context of the international research programme: Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change (CBAA), where the project has been chosen to be a pilot project, focussing on effective monitoring and evaluation of ckimate change adaptation projects.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project community participants are historically disadvantaged small scale farmers who resides near the farming area.

Policy Influence

The project output has been presented in theclimate Change Summit 2009 which was commisioned by national governement as part of sharing climate change adaptation and resillience strategies as well as to inform the National Climate Change Strategy.

Notable Community Participation

The project took Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach which engage landusers (community) and scientist in action learning

Capacity - Building Component

Through the particpatory action research project, the Rooibos Tea farmers in the area will be trained on research skills as well as with knowledge on adapting with the drought in the area.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Through the project, there will be strong awareness raising activities through national workshops etc.

Project Results

In general the project has engaged the farmers in this project which ensures that they exchanged their knowledge with the Scientists.
Project was also implemeted in the farm, allowing for proper transfer of technology to farmers
thorough the project experiements , the productivity of Roibos Tea in the area will be ensured especuially as the climate change risk increases with time.
The project also produced a significant number of community climate change adaptation papers and publications
The proejct team participated and organised a side event & presented in the South African Climate Change Summit in 2009
Several projects were also presented at various national and international platforms
The project has received international recognition by the international research programme on climate change , where it will serve as as a pilot project.
The GEF SGP grant has served as a seed grant, which contributed to the leveraging of the finanial support from Volkswagen foundation for the bigger climate change adaptation project, which is to be implemented in partnership between SSN and some Ethiopian and Organizations.
?Through the project, strong working partnerships were cemented between various organization the SouthSouthNorth Africa, Indigo Development & Change, Environmental Monitoring Group, Wits University and the University of Cape Town.
