Combating Land Degradation within the Zambezi International Water Basin
Combating Land Degradation within the Zambezi International Water Basin
1.0 Background

The project location is Chisunga, Neshangwe A and B and Chiriwo wards which lie in Mbire district about 200km north- east of Harare and 100km from Mvurwi town of Zimbabwe. the wards are located within the Manyame catchment area which forms part of the Zambezi River international water basin. the Zambezi river is vulnerable to siltation as a result of the massive land degradation taking place within its basin.

The main factors behind land degradtion in this part of the Zambezi's basin include deforestation, poor farming methods and gold panning along rivers. one of the heavily affected areas is Mushumbi area where huge gulley's have developed and the encroachment of one of the gulley's has caused the closure of a school. the other gully is rapidly extending towards th mushumbi shopping center and the main road that leads to Harare. the soil that is being degraded finds its way into manyame river which then deposits into Zambezi river. this has negative effects on wetlands and lakes downstream in Mozambique thereby threatening livelihoods and aquatic life.

project goal

1. the overall goal of the project is to enhance environmental sustainability by reducing land degradation in international water basins such as the Zambezi.
