Rainwater Harvesting for Welverdiend Schools in the Kruger to Canyon Biosphere (K2C) in the Mpumalanga Province ? South Africa

Awareness raising and educational project on Rainwater Harvesting, linking it with climate change. The tools to be used are among others: theatre; rainwater harvesting booklet and toolkits on natural resource management and on monitoring and evaluation. The project will focus in Mpumalanga on four Schools in the area of Welverdiend in Bushbuckridge.
The project will also see to the erection of rainwater tanks (cisterns) which will provide water for consumption at the schools and also for the vegetable garden programme. Bush Resources has been responsible for organic gardening in the area thruogh the Food and Trees for Africa Programme, by way of giving co-ordination and logistical support. This project will furthermore link to the Tipfuxeni Women's Empawerment Group which is responsible for implementating a number of projects in the area through the support of Bush Resources.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Builds capacity and provides technical support to communities engaged in conseervation-based community development in Soutern Africa; through the creation and support of the South African Forum for Communities and NGOs.

Notable Community Participation

Carries out the Community Mobilization and Institutional Development Initiatives (COMIDI) in South Africa's Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve, which aims to increase awareness of, finalise the institutional arrangements of , the Biosphere Reserve.

Policy Impact

Currently, South African legislation has tried to incorporate present knowledge of water resources and their sustainable use into the legislation: Chapter 1 of the National Water Bill (1998) defines the entitlement to water use (Chapter 4) and refers to Schedule 1. This schedule (permissible use of water) is mentioning roofwater as a permissible water use use: A person may, subject to this Act - (c) store and use run-off water from roof. However this right is made relative in the Water Services Act of Act of 1997, stating Chapter 1 (introductory provisions), paragraph 6: Access to water services through nominaqted water services provider: ... no person may use water services from a source other than a water services provider nominated by the water services authority...

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Mobilises communities around issues of conservation and developing natural resource based micro-enterprises in the Bushbuckridge area of South Africa's Limpopo Province.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The Project seeks to outline areas of intervention that could be followed through to ensure that the MDGs, particularly MDG number 7: 'ensure environmental sustainbilitÿ' become a reality by 2015. Of importance is the fact that all this work will be done with children of school-going age which means they will grow up respecting their environment.

Gender Focus

There is the Tipfuxeni Women's Empowerment Group which comprises about 200 women. This group is responsible for a wide range of projects in the area and they are the perfect group from where labour will be drawn for the project. Work teams will not only be limited to males, women will form part of these teams.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

This Project will provide work to otherwise unskilled local labour for a specific period of time. This will further assist in bringing income to various households and in a small way, respond to MDG 1 which is: eradicate extreme poverty and hunger.
