Kamori Goat Farming for Sustainable Environment and Livelihoods
Pakistan has been divided into 10 agro-ecological zones (AEZs): Indus Delta, southern irrigated plain, sandy desert, northern irrigated plains, Barani (rainfed) areas, wet mountains, northern dry mountains, western dry mountains, dry western plateau and the Sulaiman Piedmont (PARC 1980). And is a geographically diverse, with coastal beaches, lagoons and mangrove swamps in the south; sandy deserts, fertile plains and dissected upland in the centre; and valleys, snow-covered peaks and glaciers in the north. It has an estimated population of 135.3 million people and a population growth rate of 2.77%. Agriculture is the largest sector of the economy, contributing 24% of GDP, although this represents a decrease from 29% in 1984?85. It accounts for half of the employed labor force and is the largest source of foreign exchange earnings. Its growth rate over the last five decades has remained at around 4% per annum. There are 34 breeds of goat, of which the most important are Beetal, Dera Din Panah, Kamori, Nachini and Teddy. Kamori Goat is mostly found and kept in three districts of Sindh Province. This indigenous breed is going to be vanished out rapidly. The flood of 1973 in Sindh and over exporting of goat to the Arab Countries mostly reduced its generation and caused disappearance in the open markets. It was over exported to Arab Countries because its meat is very delicious. Kamori goat is higher in weight against other breeds of goats and gives more milk than other goats, normally it gives six kg per day. The cost of one kg milk in the area is about Rs. 25/=.
Proposed activity will be implemented in District Badin, which is one of the coastal districts of Sindh has been declared as the poorest district of Pakistan by UNDP in its recent report. With the total population of 1.4 million, health and education indicators are very poor in the district. Adult literacy rates are 10.5% for women and 34.7% for men. Badin is a hazard-prone district, which over the last five decades has remained in the grip of an uninterrupted cycle of disasters in one form or the other. Cyclones, heavy rainfalls, droughts and floods follow each other with short-lived intervals.
4. Project Objective and Proposed Activity
The project is aimed at conserving the threatened breed of Kamori Goat in Sindh, with focus to increase its rearing and promotion in the Indus Deltaic area. Specific objectives of the project are;
Objective 1: Conserving the threatened breed of Kamori Goat in Sindh by the project period
Activity streams:
1. Identifying major threats and diseases that caused the reduction in the production of Kamori Goat
2. Identifying protection measures for the conservation of Kamori Goat
3. Developing a farm/shed of Kamori Goat in District Badin of atleast 20 goats
4. Hiring 2 local Livestock Keepers to organize Goat shed effectively
Objective 2: Increasing rearing of Kamori Goat tendency in the area to sustain this breed
Activity streams:
1. Identify at least 20 progressive livestock keepers in the area
2. consultative and mobilization meetings with the identified progressive livestock keepers
3. Supply at least 40 goats annually to the local community at the end of project period on two years agreement
4. Organize One training for the progressive livestock keepers on the management of Kamori goat
Objective 3: Raising awareness, documenting the lessons learnt on the Kamori Goat
Activity Streams:
1. Organize a provincial level conference on Kamori Goat
2. Mobilizing local community to sustain this breed and increase production
3. Introduce the Goat in major Livestock markets of District Badin to increase rearing
4. Printing and documenting the lessons learnt and publishing a document in Sindhi and English language on the threats and solutions to Kamori Goat
5. Developing linkages with Agriculture and livestock institutions in Sindh
7. Anticipated Results
The project is expected to prevent the extinction of very important Kamori Breed of Goat with the involvement of the local communities by increasing goat population and production as well as sustaining and improving the local environment. However the specific anticipated results of the project are as under:
? Communities are mobilized to conserve the threatened species of Kamori Goat
? A farm of 20 goats is established, and rearing of Kamori Goat is ensured through supply of goat on the two years agreement ( that community will not sell Goats up to two years)
? Approximately 40 goats are supplied to the community
? Increased incomes of the 40 active poor families of Targeted area
? Increased rearing of Kamori Goat in the targeted area
? Published a document on Solutions of the Threats to Kamori Goat
? Developed market Kamori Goat through effective awareness raising and motivational sessions at village, district and provincial level
? Progressive farmers, livestock keeping communities are able to rear the indigenous species of Kamori Goat.
? Reduced Mortality in the Kamori Goat at reasonable rate in the area
? 20 Villagers have knowledge of the breeding and production process of Kamori Goat

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
Newly established farm of the Kamori Goat will be a supply point in the area, where this breed will be available for rearing, demonstrating and research. In the first year of project, the farm will supply approximately 40 goats to the community on two years agreement (for two years community will not sell Goats) in order to increase its rearing in the area. Goats will be supplied to the pro poor families living in the area. Community will be made responsible to provide a new born female goat to the farm for its sustainability, in a way farm will maintain its size of 40 goats, as well to ensure the supply of goats to the community members on subsidized rates after completion of one year funding. Female goats will be supplied to the communities on subsidized rates after one year, whereas male goats will be sold out in the open markets to earn money for the recurring and overheads of farm. The Farm will revolve the mechanism of supply and adopting the goats for sustainable livelihoods in the area. Communities themselves at their end will also increase the rearing of the goat through selling the goat kids to the others. The proposed partnership would embark on a strategic initiative to improve livelihoods of local population, besides its great impact on biodiversity conservation in the area.
