Veredas Vivas

São Desidério is a region threatened by large scale agriculture, ranked at the top of the list of grain producers in the Brazilian northeast. Remaining traditional communities are isolated amidst large estates which are generally established by land-grabbing. The geraizeiro communities have lost areas formerly used for wild collection and struggle to keep their lands.
The project aims to increase the quality of life for the Ponte de Mateus population, by rescuing local culture, capacity building and organization.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

As a way of increasing self esteem and keeping people in the field, the project will promote capacity-building in bio-jewelry and other handicraft production, associative practices and processing of native fruits in order to generate income from the Cerrado biodiversity. Concepts of agroecology and medicinal plants are also part of the activities planned in the project.

Policy Impact

Public policy is not directly targeted by the project, but the grantee intends to exert positive influence on policies that are related with the geraizeiros.

Notable Community Participation

The community is starting to participate in the activities proposed by the NGO 10envolvimento (from Barreiras, BA). In each activity there is participation in increasing numbers by community members. Additionally, the neighboring community has requested to join in on the project

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

the actions of the project will build conscience in the Ponte de Mateus population and neighboring communities? inhabitants, by showing the importance of the Cerrado and its capacity to generate income.

Capacity - Building Component

the group in Ponte de Mateus will be able to learn about associative practices, native fruit processing, handicraft and bio-jewelry techniques and agroecology.

Project Results

- Established a partnership with Pacari association, City Hall of São Desidério, Public Ministry from Bahia, Diocese de Barreiras and IBAMA
- The City Hall of São Desidério build a laboratory of medical plants to be use by the project
- Affirmation of recognition of the geraizeiro identity by the community increasing their self-esteem
- Rescue of the traditional knowledge of use of medical plants, culture and culinary
- Capacity building in medical plants and recycling, of 30 people
- Creation of a group to produce handicraft
- Creation of a pharmacy
- Promoted two editions of the event Cavalgada no Rastro dos Tropeiros
- Participating in: VI and VII Meeting and Fair of the Folks from Cerrado; Fair of Grande Sertão Veredas; Festa das águas
- Won the prize Odair Firmino de Solidariedade from Cáritas, worth U$ 4,933.39
- Elaboration of the booklet about the history of the community and the project Veredas Vivas
- Capacity building of Agroforestry System by IBAMA
- Receive visits: University of State of Bahia - UNEB, Federal University of Bahia ? UFBA, Public Ministry from Bahia, Agency of Environmental of São Desidério, EMBRAPA Cerrados, Ministry of Environmental, the mayor of São Desidério, Group of Reisado.
