limiting Climatic Change by Promoting the Use of Environment Friendly Transportation

The project succeeded in promoting the use of bicycles as a cleaner, inexpensive method of transport. By reducing the level of co2 emissions the project can serve as a contributer to the global efforts of mitigating the consequences of climate change. The environmental awareness raising component succeeded in educating the community members on the importance of alternative transport as a means of protecting the environment. Through the use of revolving funds the project is currently sustained by the revenues generated from the sale of the bicycles.
Project activities included:
1.Organization of 10 seminars to raise awareness to the dangers of pollution and to outline the phases of the project
2. Providing 600 bicycles for beneficiaries in Fayoum governorate (500 from GEF fund and 100 from installment revenue)
3. Printing and disseminating publications to promote the main concept behind the project
4. Providing technical and financial training on project and loan management

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

- 2 training workshops were successfully conducted : 1- Management of Small Grants 2- Effective Marketing - 10 seminars were held to raise the awareness of the community to global environmental issues and specifically to mitigation of consequences of climate change - The implementing organization joined forces with 5 other local organizations to maximize the number of beneficiaries and distribution

Policy Influence

- Changing the mindsets of a community and convincing them to convert to alternative clean transport

Notable Community Participation

- Community participants attended the opening and closing conferences outlining the phases, objectives and, later, the achievements of the project -Community members participated in 10 seminars throughout the project

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

- Reduction in the costs of transportation (petrol consumption) enables the availability of more financial resources for households - The availability of cheaper transport allows for more children to be enrolled in schools and to continue their education - 10 job opportunities were created for youth

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

-The 10 seminars held throughout the duration of the project focused on propagating the concept of ecological, clean and sustainable transport as a means of contributing to the larger global mission to mitigate climate change - Various promotional materials were disseminated as part of the awareness raising campaign: posters, stickers, boards

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Revolving funds were established and sustained and installment methods provided to facilitate payment and to maximize the number of beneficiaries

Replication of project activities

The five other organizations that were involved in the implementation of the project are currently replicating this project in other areas through their own funding

Gender Focus

There was no particular focus on women in this project, but the female members of the community showed a large interest in participating in the awareness raising seminars
