Decreasing load on pastures and combat to land degradation on the territory of Karaul rural district, Abay district, Eastern Kazakhstan
Karaul settlement is a centre of Abay district. The population is 5233 people, 1104 courtyards, 21 farmlands, cattle stock is 21079 heads, the pastures territory is 57 thousand hectares. Cattle-breading is traditional for this area. After the soviet system has collapsed, the pasturing system has also fallen down. Local people haven?t had a possibility to rent the land for pasturing. As a result, the cattle have been breading round the village for many years. As the number of the cattle has increased during the previous years, the pressure on the pastures round the settlement has intensified. There are some remote areas that have been used in the soviet period, but couldn?t be used as pastures now due to lack of water sources.
