Enhancement of Community Action for sustainable Watershed Management through Soil and Water Conservation and Biological Diversity

The project aims to undertake different different soil conservation structure to upgradt and revitalize the degraded landscape so as to enhance soil fertility, reforrestation and increase surface and ground water. It will also introduce area closrue for natural regeneration, undertake nursery establishment for seedling production and planation and select beneficiaries. A comprehensive traning will also be given to successfully adopt and sustain the project ideas to selected model farmers and the wider community at large.

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Discussion forums and project familiarization workshops will be organized involving all stakeholders to enhance communication and knowledge associated to risks caused by industrial waste and their impact on the global environment.

It will play an important role in bringing impact on the current policy on environment related activities.

Notable Community Participation

The community will contribute US$29,535 to the total project cost in-kind and will actively be engaged in carrying out different activities of the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project will introduce grass and legume seeds production, compost making, production of fuel saving stoves, provision of small ruminant animals (sheep) and beekeeping through transitional beehives which will open opportunities to the target community to engage themselves in income generating activities.

Gender Focus

The target groups of this project are the most vulnerable ones particularly women who account for 40% of the total people (3,000) living in the watershed area.

Capacity - Building Component

Trainings and technical assistance will be given to the target community to strengthen them in carrying out the project's activities.

Project Results

* The project has positively affected the issue of land degradation in the community *2 forums, 1 workshop and 4 environmental education trainings have been successfully completed.
*2 ha of land have been protected through area closure
*5ha of gully re-vegetation
*10kms of soil and 15 km of stone bund have been constructed
*100 trenches have been constructed
*1000 m3 of both cut off drain and stone check dam have been constructed
*20m3 of hill side terracing has been constructed
*150 kg of seeds have been collected and purchased
* 270,000 tree seedlings and 30,000 fruit seedlings have been produced
*300,000 of pits have been dug
* 300,000 seedlings have been planted
*100 ha of grass land has been improved
*100ha of dasho/legume grass has been produced
* 50 pits for compost has been dug
* 200 stove moulds have been produced
* 150 animals have been supplied
