Sustainable Wildlife at Alaçam Mountains - working with local communities for the community hunting ground management and the improvement of the chukar population (Alectoris chukar)
The project?s main objective is ?sustainable wild life? in Alaçam Mountains. It aims to create a model for a game reserve area and a community management of an hunting ground in order to ensure sustainability of the chukars (alectoris chukar), a game species seriously threatened locally due to over hunting. The project includes;
? the production and introduction of chukars into the reserve area,
? raising awareness of hunters,
? raising awareness of locals in the benefits of chukars in agricultural pest control,
? monitoring of wildlife,
? creating a community level hunting management Committee including local hunting club members and local authorities.
The project is a first in Turkey in terms of a CBO taking the initiative in protection of an area for the conservation of a bird species where the local (provincial) government gives their support and delegates the authority to the CBO for the hunting ground management and the production of the chukars. The grantee has been taking care of the breeding of the chukars and releasing them into the reserved area, while also monitoring the holding capacity of the area, in order not to disturb the natural balances of the ecosystem.
The project also has a strong social side, as the breeding and releasing of the birds will be done by children taken care of by Child Protection Services (Social Services) and former hunters.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
SGP support to this initiative builds on a 2 years work by the grantee which had already reached a phenomenal success of converting several hunters to conservationists. The project will continue this endevaour and will work on furthering this, while also improving the capacity of the local people, both in terms of breeding of the birds, and also in terms of their conservation.
Notable Community Participation
The project is building on a serious community involvement, as the local villagers are fully supportive of the initiative, and most of them have already given up their hunting habits in lieu of conservation priorities.
