Supporting Local Ownership for the Promotion and Conservation of Yumurtal?k Lagoons Adana;
Project area covers Yumurtal?k Lagoons in the east of Çukurova Delta (Adana) and the village named Deveciusagi in lagoons? northern entrance. Yumurtalik Lagoons is part of a large and very important wetland system in Adana region, which is a 59 ha. And is an internationally important wetland of Turkey in its Mediterranean coast which includes lakes and lagoons formed by Ceyhan River, salty and fresh water marshes, meadows, vast sand dunes between the sea and the lagoons, and forests of Pinus halepensis. The area contains several bird, mammal, amphibian and insect species, some of which are endemic, threatened or rare.
The Project aims to build a connection and a sense of ownership between the Yumurtalik Lagoons, a very important wetland system and a Key Biodiversity Area, with peoples of the nearby city Adana, via establishing linkages between local population and the city, with a view to promote the conservation and sustainability of the lagoons. The project, with cash co-financing from the BTC Co., will restore a building located at the very vicinity of Halep Camligi as a Training and Visitors Centre. With the support of the SGP, KAD will ensure equipping of the centre with information pertaining to the importance of the area in terms of biodiversity, as well as demonstrating the measures of conservation and containing training materials for visitors, in line with the Yumurtalik Lagoons Management Plan which was approved in 2007.
Through the project, the grantee aims to build awareness and local ownership of the area towards its better conservation, bridging the city and the KBA, particularly linking the local students both from the Cukurova University, such as the Students Association for Nature or Bird Watching Students Association, and high schools in Adana and environs.

Project Characteristics and Results
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The area is already a known area with a conservation focus, among policy makers and academicians, but there is little interest from the local people. With the project there will be awareness improved at the local level. As the project area is a formidably important wetland with a lot of important biodiversity aspects, this awareness will not be limited to only the "beauty" of the area.
Capacity - Building Component
The project has a significant capacity building component, which is diverted to the local people. This characteristic separates this project from its similars, as mostly Training and Visitor's Centre's focus on visitor training/awareness raising. While this project and Centre will of course, improve the awareness of the visitors through the activities and information materials it will encompass, the main focus of the project is to make the local population aware and proud of the area and to be actively involved in its conservation.
