Combating land degradation in Kisarawe District through school woodlots and rainwater harvesting activities
Kisarawe District is one of the areas in Tanzania with the highest rate of land degradation. Deforestation is taking place at an alarming rate. For example, between 1999 and 2006, statistics show that over 5,200ha. of forest was clear-felled. Deforestation is higher in Kisarawe because of high demand of timber and timber products in Dar, the city which lies very close to the district. Water is also a problem in Kisarawe. Due to its high ground configuration, it is not easy to tap underground water. There have been efforts to address the problem of deforestation and water supply in Kisarawe. However, a sustainable solution lies in the following strategies (1) To increase supply of timber and timber products through massive tree planting activities (2) To promote rainwater harvesting technologies.
The project main objective aims at demonstrating on how to promote wide-scale reforestation through school woodlots.
The project also aims at demonstrating on how communities could harvest rainwater for domestic use.
