Revival of traditional seasonal live-stock breading in a desert zone of Southern Kazakhstan through rehabilitation of the water supply system and expansion of Aidarly settlement local community’s pastures territory
Aidarly settlement is located in a deserted zone of Zhambyl district of Almaty area. The main source of life for local community members is pasturing. The pastures of the settlement are 11,000 hectares. At the same time 7-8 thousand hectares are summer pastures. If earlier traditional seasonal pasturing was used, at the moment the infrastructure of the remote pastures is broken. Now all the cattle of the local people (15772 sheep and goats, 1200 cows, 300 horses and 45 camels) are breaded on the available summer pastures. All this leads to over grazing and pastures degradations.
Project aim:
Revival of traditional seasonal pasturing due to restoration of pastures water supply and expansion of pastures territories
Project tasks:
- Irrigate pastures on the territory of over 90 000 hectares, by means of rehabilitation of 14 desolated mineshafts on the seasonal remote pastures
- Organize seasonal local community?s cattle pasturing
- Training of shepherds how use the scheme of standardized cattle breeding (loading, rate of use, time the cattle pasturing should start and finish)
- Decrease load on the pastures round the settlement and localize pastures degradation
Project results:
Realization of the project will allow to arrange seasonal cattle grazing for 40-42 families (25 % of the local community members); to involve more than 90,000 hectares of sandy grounds to the pastures circulation; to improve pastures condition round the settlement; to raise efficiency of the cattle breading production (additional weight, safety of young animals, etc.); to improve social and economic situation in the settlement (cattle livestock increase, increase of incomes, improvement of environment round and in the settlement.
