Clean Environment and Poverty Reduction with the Promotion of Bio-Digester Technology in rural communities
The project is aiming at Installation of 200 biogas digesters with 100 toilet-connections & 150 compost huts in the 50 village-based-saving-groups in the target areas, together with the recruitment and training of 14 masons and 3 technician supervisors for durability and sustainability of the digesters, helping the 200 families, in the villages-based-saving-groups, with the possibility of including others, to improve their income generation capability through the empowerment and capacity building on home gardening (papaya, cucumber, water melon and others) with the knowledge of the effective use of biogas digester affluent, with technical guidance and training from CEDAC experts.

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
All the people in the target areas are small farmers, (rice, pig, peanut) receiving only one poor crop each year due to lack of local capacity in the protection of environmental values and protection of soil degradation. Rice fields consist of 9774 hectares and farm land 1,149 hectares. Apart from farming, people earn their living from cutting firewood. But, there are 13,830 heads of draft animal and 14,001 pigs. These are potential for the application of the biogas digesters technology in order to enhance their livelihoods by reducing their daily expenses, increasing their income generation capability and improving the environment in which they live.
- 200 farmers will get additional loans from PDI credit scheme to enhance their small scale business.
Capacity - Building Component
PDI?s existing 50 villages-based-saving-groups (consist of 1,110 families) will acquire the knowledge on the benefits from biogas digester technology. Immediate results are:
- 50 villages-based-saving-groups approximately 1,110 farmers will get better understanding on the benefits from biogas digester and the use of its affluent through promotion activities.
200 farmers will gains more knowledge on how to improve their home gardening and increase their income generation. Immediate results are:
- 200 farmers will have a chance to learn how to improve farming technique (Chamcar, Rice farming, home gardening) and get follow up technical support from CEDAC master trainers.
A strategic plan to improve the people?s understanding of the benefits from bio-digesters and increase farmers? interests in the biogas digesters. Immediate results are:
- 50 communities leaders, 14 masons, 3 technician supervisors, 5 PDI?s credit agents have a chance to discuss face-to-face to find out weakness & Strength points and make recommendations for a strategic plan to improve the knowledge of the benefits of biogas and to motivate farmers to construct bio-digesters.
- 50 communities? leaders, 14 masons, 3 technician supervisors & 5 PDI?s credit agents have better understanding of what the program plan of action for promotion of bio-digesters.
