Implementation of environmentally-safe land degradation methods on the northern part of Alakol lake
Land degradation is one of the main problems of Urzhar district, Eaten Kazakhstan area. Unsystematic cattle breading and excessive increase of pressure on pastures around the settlements has led to degradation of more than 40% of the grass-land pastures. At the same time a tendency for the cattle livestock growth is observed. Many years ago nomadic cattle breading was used as s primordially traditional method. It allowed land owners to prevent degradation of the natural fodder lands. At the moment the system of the seasonal pastures turnover is disorganized.
Project aim:
Raise the degraded lands and pastures production through introduction of alternative land use methods.
Project tasks:
- Development and implementation of land degradation reduction program on the territory of the rural consumers cooperative
- Raising the degraded lands production through sowing of the perennials adapted to the local conditions
- Arrangement of the pastures turnover and use of alternative energy sources (wind, solar) for improvement of local community livelihood on the remote pastures
- Propaganda of the project results for further duplication in the Eastern Kazakhstan
Project results:
- The developed pastures rehabilitation and sustainable use program allow farmers to carry out purposefully the actions to prevent pastures degradation processes and to guarantee realization the project activity on sustainable pastures use after the financing of the project is completed
- 300 hectares of the haying lands created by cropping the grasses adapted for local conditions
- Fodder lands production increased
- The pastures turnover on the area of 1000 hectares organized for prevention of the pastures degradation
- Local community awareness rose

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
30 Farming companies involved into the project activity. They take part in sowing of perennial plants, harvesting, feeding, maintenance and cattle grazing on the remote pastures. Upon project completion local population have an opportunity to estimate its results through visiting an independent "solar house", "wind well?, " rehabilitated field " and "improved pasture". For this purpose the project organize "Days of field", where qualified experts and farmers could demonstrate advantages of the alternative agriculture management methods.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
50 seasonal workplaces opened for local population. Income provided through sustainable manufacture and selling of competitive agricultural production on the markets of Urzhar, Ust-Kemen, Taldykorgan, Almaty. Use of the solar generator and wind water engine allow farmers to save significant means intended to purchase of gasoline, which in its turn, fill up family budgets. The families not sufficiently provided get support in a form of hay and other production.
