Development and rational use of pastures in Moiynkum sands
Development and rational use of pastures in Moiynkum sands
Moiynkum district is located in the northern-east part of Zhambyl area and borrows the territory of 20,5 K square meters, which makes 35% of the entire area territory. The agricultural territory is 280,2 K hectares (53 % of the whole area territory), including 271,7 K hectares of pastures. Having had the pastures with variety of plants and convenient geographical location, the district has a strong agro-industrial potential and perspective for agriculture development and processing of agricultural raw materials. Moiynkum district has 62 farms. One of the basic activities of the local community is pasturable cattle breeding. The basic pastures and haymaking area located to the north of the settlement is not used because of flood of the river Shu, and pastures in the sands of Moiynkum are not used yet basically because of lack of water (the destroyed wells). In this connection, the cattle is pastured all-the-year-round only around the settlement. This leads to strong pastures degradation. The pastures efficiency has decreased twice for the last years. Danger of dusty storms is created.

Project aim:
Rational pasture lands usage of northern part of Moinkum sands and localization of degrading pastures round the aul

Project tasks:
- Introduction and subsequent use of the remote pasturing technology on the deserted pastures of Moiynkum
- Training of shepherds in rational pastures use
- Creation of conditions for the pastures degradation decreasing round the settlement and improvement of ecological situation
- Raising of the cattle breading efficiency and improvement of economic condition of the local community

Project results:
- Conditions of rational and long-term sustainable pastures use (over 2000 hectares) created
- High-grade cattle feeding maintained with the subsequent increase of the outrun herds 2 times
- Pressure on the pastures decreased 7 % in the first year and 12 % for the second year of the project implementation
- Ecological situation in the settlement improved due to reduction of the cattle grazing round the settlement and moving it to the remote pastures
