Development of the Golden Eagle project: improvement of the habitat and forage reserve of the birds of prey, and pastures through the Karabular ravine irrigation
During the period of Y 2001-2003 the Golden Eagle project was implemented by the REMEZ NGO with cooperation of the Kazakh falconers ("berkutchi") club. This project was intended to build a conservation and rehabilitation model for the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetus) populations and those of other endangered predatory birds listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan and IUCN. It was also worked to support and develop traditions of Kazakh falconers ("berkutchi"). The project monitored the populations of Golden Eagle and other predatory birds; promoted conservation and maintenance of these populations; disseminated information about biodiversity conservation and environmental education to the local community. During the project implementation birds of prey protection activities were implemented, winter forage and monitoring was arranged, the "The Falconer's House" was constructed, permanent enclosures for birds were established.
After the project completion during the Y 2004-2007 additional enclosures for the birds were established, jurt was constructed, video-equipment was installed at the Falconers museum to demonstrate educational programmes for tourists, local community, schoolchildren. The Museum exposition is still updated with original attributes of hunting and berkutchies?life, mass-media publications. Annually over 150 tourists visit the Museum. Annually members of the berkutchi?s club participate in 8-10 tournaments demonstration performances all over Kazakhstan and the Central Asia. All the golden eagles belongs to the local community members were marked by microchips, and are legalized and registered. Berkutchi club members together with inspectors protect golden eagles all over the territory. Thus, the project has demonstrated stability.
Last tendencies has demonstrated significant fluctuations in number of golden eagles, directly connected with number chukar (one of the basic forage for the golden eagle) Chukar is known with its sharp rises and recessions in numbers which depend on wintering conditions and forage availability. And for the Chukar nesting watering places is the most critical.
One of such gorges near to the Nura settlement is Karabulak. Many years ago, there were a number of low-power springs here, the small rivulet followed from the ravine. Now, because of sharp pasturing decrease, stopping in the springs clearing, they have become covered with plant and soil residues, the drainage here is very poor. Thus, water doesn?t reach the bottom of the ravine, and the river flows only during spring thawing and strong rains.
The main goals of the project are: 1) creation of constant watering places for wild birds and animals by clearing springs, construction of water-stores and renewal of constant stream through the Karabular ravine; 2) improvement of habitat for wild birds and animals through planting of saplings of oleaster, elm, poplar, willow near to the springs and alongside the river; 3) establishment of additional fertilizing places for chukar during winter time to ensure its normal wintering, stabilization and raising of the population, and as a result, to improve forage reserve for golden eagles; 4) propaganda of the wild animals protection and pastures use activities.
