Supporting the Ankara Goat Farming for its Survival
Supporting the Ankara Goat Farming for its Survival
The project aims to support the breeding of the disappearing Ankara Goat (Capra hircus). This goat typically has very high quality wool, but is running the risk of genetic erosion as it is not breed in isolated pure herds, showing specific attention to the needs of the particular animal which is different than the common domesticated goat. With the project, the local people who still have Ankara Goats in their herds, is taught how to breed and feed the animal properly, care and veterinary assistance are provided to make the animals healthier. With healthier animals comes higher quality wool in greater quantities, which would make the breeding of the animal a preference as it would be providing the locals a steady income.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
The project has a strong capacity building component through which the expert veterinarians and agricultural engineers provide information to the local farmers regarding the special needs of the animal, which are not extreme. Taking special care of these animals, is neither hard nor costly, with just some minor attention to detail about the eating and breeding habits of the animal, the animal's reproductive rate, quality of wool as well as its quantity can be improved dramatically.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
The project is aiming to convert the now almost abandoned breeding, care and feeding habits of Ankara Goat, to a profitable business alternative for goat farming. Through the project it is aimed to demonstrate that with a little care the animal can survive and be a complementary income source.
