The Conservation of Protected Areas and Beaches through Community Participation and the Development of Alternative Livelihoods in South Western St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
This project was developed to respond to environmental, poverty and social issues in the communities of Brighton, Stubbs, Diamond, Enhams, Calder, Carapan, Calder Ridge, Victoria Village, Glemorgan and Mc Carthy. It will address issues associated with the destruction of turtle nesting sites and the deforestation of one of the oldest forest reserves in the Americas (The Kingshill Forest Reserve c. 1791). The capacity of young people will be built to undertake leadership roles and develop viable business enterprises.
The project objectives will be to:
? develop the capacity of the communities to identify, analyse, develop, and implement strategies to address environmental problems;
? implement community composting as an effective way of reducing biodegradable waste in the waste stream and to promote the use of compost as an alternative biofertiliser;
?
(develop small sustainable ecotourism business enterprise to augment local incomes and mitigate the impact of poverty;
?
plant over 10,000 trees within a three year period to help improve the quality of the
environment; and
? nurture community pride as a motivation for sound environmental management.
This project will also serve as a catalyst for mobilising the community using local traditions of music and community theatre.
