Rehabilitation of the degraded pastures and rational arid pastures use of Umbet farming complex, Zadarya settlement, Arys, South Kazakhstan
Now Arys settlement of the Southern Kazakhstan, as well as many other areas of the country are under land degradation processes. For the last 10-15 years arid pastures which have been served as basic forage reserve for the cattle, were exposed by unsystematic and intensive cattle pasturing. As a result, strong pastures degradation round the settlements is observed. This couses alarm as the cattle livestock is growing.

Project aim:
Rational pastures use, degraded lands rehabilitation and agrobiodiversity conservation of the Umbet production complex in Arys settlement, through introduction of progressive and effective methods to raise production of the forage lands of arid pastures.

Project tasks:
- Introduction of the arid pastures rational use
- Cultivation of the zoned (local) arid species grades for getting seeds, creation of the sowed pastures with mixed crops, for planting black saxaul saplings in a form of pastures protecting shelterbelts, and also for development of arid forage production
- Organization of information campaign about ecological and social and economic consequences of pastures degradation and directions the problem could be solved

Project results:
- 290 hectares of the degraded arid pastures will be rehabilitated; therewith forage lands productivity will fundamentally rise
- 18 people of amongst the local community members will get workplaces due to the project realization
- 18 families in 3 farms will increase the income due to the profit gained from additionally produced agricultural products
- Systematic rational pastures rotation scheme will lead to considerable improvement of the pastures herbage quality, and growing of the entire cattle livestock and increase of the cattle nutrition state

Project Characteristics and Results
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
18 people among the local community members got workplaces due to the project realization. 18 families in 3 farms increased the income due to the profit gained from additionally produced agricultural products. Improvement of the local community livelihood in Zadarja settlement , whose well-being directly depends on pastures, decreased unemployment and poverty amongst rural community members.
Notable Community Participation
All members of local community participate in project realization because of their alive interest in its successful implementation. Local community members will be involved in the project implementation at all the stages taking into account available skills, traditional knowledge and experience. In particular, local people carry out the tractor mechanized works, leaving and superficial processing of pastures, forage storage and transportation, sowing and preliminary tillage before sowing.
