Promotion of the first Marine National Park in Albania: Karaburuni Marine National Park
Promotion of the first Marine National Park in Albania: Karaburuni Marine National Park
The area of Karaburuni peninsula and Kanali Coast is of outstanding natural beauty representing one of the few remaining pristine coastal and marine habitats in Albania and in the Mediterranean. The marine environment and its rocky outcrops have been listed as a suitable habitat for the Mediterranean Monk Seal due to its remoteness and low human disturbance. The topography and lack of freshwater has been the main reasons why this area has not been used for stable human settlements and preserved over centuries in its pristine condition.
The development of tourism in the Vlora Bay and in the south, create the opportunity that this area could be used for recreational activities working in synergy with the tourist facilities and these activities could provide valuable cash flow for the management of the protected area.
The establishment of the marine national park is a necessary milestone in the effort of protecting the marine habitat. Albania so far does not have any marine parks and this project aims to promote the establishment of such marine park by exposing to the public the natural and aesthetic values of the area as well as articulating the necessary legal framework.
