Community Based Livelihood Improvement in Protected Area
The project aims to contribute to poverty alleviation and climate change mitigation through increasing the adaptation of improved cook stove and ecological agriculture in Kbal Teuk commune, Teuk Phos disrtict of Kampong Chhnang province. It is expected that both men and women are involved in saving fuel wood, reducing CO2 and health risk, total food and agricultural production and agricultural income of 700 families from 10 villages will be increased at least around 30 %, and 90% of subsistence rice farming families are being able to produce sufficient rice to meet their basic consumption needs. The participatory approach will be conducted, especially capacity building for farmer expert of improved cooked stove, ecological agriculture, and saving animator.
Project objectives:
(1) To protect 3,800 ha of natural forest in the protected area through building the capacity of community forestry committee members to conserve their forest and prepare necessary documents for official registration with the Ministry of Environment or Forestry Administration, and to raise awareness of the villagers;
(2) To increase agricultural production and income generation of 500 farmer families by 30% during the project life time, and reduce climate change threat through ecological agriculture development and dissemination; and
(3) To conduct feasibility for rehabilitating one spill way in Chi Pok village to improve accessibility of villagers to water supply for increasing agriculture production.

Project Characteristics and Results
Capacity - Building Component
Both men and women will be equally provided an opportunity to participate in training, exchange visit, workshop both inside and outside village, from which they gain new opinion, knowledge and skill to improve their living condition. This capacity building include awareness raising (e.g. climate change, conventional agriculture practice), technical training (e.g. improved stove building, rice and vegetable growing, chicken raising) and management training (e.g. self-help group record/book keeping, facilitation skill). They are also encouraged to get involved in management and leadership such as leader of saving and women group, and key farmer or stove promoter through farmer to farmer extension approach.
Gender Focus
There are about 1,300 female beneficiaries in the project (on the average 2-3 women member from each of the 500 families). Women will benefit from the project through:
- Using improved/efficient stove: women and girls are the main person responsible for food preparation, including collecting firewood, cooking meal, cleaning kitchen devices etc. By using improved stove, each family can save time around one hour a day from less firewood collection and faster cooking, thus less exposure to their health risk of stove smoke and have more time for other activities (education, social participation and economic).
- Self-help group (SHG) or saving group together with skill training on agriculture production and small business which provide them an opportunity for increasing income generation activities through improving access to investment capital and technical knowledge and skill.
