After Solar bicycle Development Research Project is finished, TVs, Radio and news paper show many times to the public. There are many people intersected on solar renewable energy. They called and came to LOCAB office to request for supplying solar energy to them for solar home system and battery charging stations. From that demand LOCAB had taken the further steps to supply and install solar power home system and big scale solar system for temple and restaurants at the rural areas. From strong skill and real demand LOCAB had designed a Solar Battery Charging Station diagram and successfully research to make effective and cheapest charging controller by LOCAB president. By the end of the 12 months project, 4 solar battery stations will be installed, to use and introduce to the public and to build awareness on solution of climate change through the medias (TVs show, News papers and Radio call in show).
At lease 24 committee members will get trained on the basic solar battery charging system and how to manage battery station operation as well as its financial management.
Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods
At least 480 families direct benefit from solar battery charging stations for 25 years. The charging fee currently charge 1600 Riels = $ 0.4 per charge but after we install the solar charging station the fee will be on 800 Riels= $ 0.2 per charge. This project benefits to climate and supply rural electricity with low price charge. The battery can be used for lights, water pump in small family farming. LOCAB now able to assemble the save energy water pumps for home farming water pump People who growth home gardening also benefits from this project intern of using battery charged for pumping water for home garden for income generation project.
Gender Focus
This project will benefit at least 480 women from 480 families who will receive the solar battery charging service. The benefit they get include low cost for batter charging, use battery power to run water pump for small farm or home garden, home lighting at night, battery for powering on radio and television from which they can learn development news as well as various educational programs.
Project Results
In general, project is reaching more than its goal which state that by the end of the 12 months project, 4 solar battery stations will be installed, use and introduce to the public and to build awareness on solution of climate change through the medias( TVs show, News papers and Radio call in show) and its main objectives are to establish four solar battery charging stations in Peany and Thma ed commune Kompong tralach district Kompong Chhnang Province, to introduce the solar battery station to public about environment protection and solution to the climate change problem on TVs show, News papers and Radio call in show and to train and hand over to local committee for sustainable project in the future. LOCAB had completed more than expected, because LOCAB able to use its capacity to invent hybrid solar charge controller, invent better solar stand and get local people to contribute their in kind like generators, place for their business and share their client with the project.
The project had been introduced to many people, NGOs, news papers and TVs. The first solar charging station that use hybrid system can run generator and solar at the same time in the case sunlight is less or number of batteries is overload. This is a good adaptation with existing local generator battery charging. Until, today there are still people NGOs and journalist from Germany visited and asked for more information and write article in their news for EU countries.
Green energy committee members had immediate benefits from the project totally 28 families and villager about 420 families had received direct benefit to their families.
Committee received some compensation from the station base on his/her work to come to visit and count the batteries being charge every day to oversea fund have been contributed to committee box and participate in the meeting to make decision on how the money will use.
420 families had also received a low price battery charging fee from 4 solar battery charging station. For the battery 50-100 Ah with 420 families can save R 800-R1200 per charge for 3-6 day use. They mostly charge 4-6 times per month. Use this practice to calculate as mean people save 900 riles per charge X 4 times per month = 3600 riels save per family/ month and 43200/year. Within 10 years x 43200 X 420 families =181 440 000 riels about = $ 44253.65
Base on the existing practice 24 HP (Horses power) consumed diesel at least 12 liter/day. So 12 liters per days x 30 days= 360 liters per month and 9 months per year = 3240 liters
(Rainy season 3-4 month need to use generator to support 2-3 hour per day)
We can see that 360 liters x 9 months x 4 station x 10 years = 129600 liters which is the big amount that can produce CO2 up to 353.85666 tones and 200353.641 m3 volume. (Formula from www. icbe.com/carbondatabase/volumeconverter.asp)
This project is also contributing to save environment especially mitigation of climate change. The project reduces burning diesel 12960 liters per year. This 4 station can reduce CO2 35.38567 tones per year and 20035.366 m3 CO2 volume per year. (Formula from www. icbe.com/carbondatabase/volumeconverter.asp).
Compared to existing practice 24 HP diesel generator consumed diesel at least 12 liter/day x 365 days x 4 station = 17520 liters/year = CO2 47.83618 tones or 27084.845 m3 volume . If they did not use solar they produce this much CO2. But if they use solar they reduce CO2 35.38567 tones per year or 20035.366 m3 CO2 volume per year . More over the project had rebuild community spirit to support community development, committee form with difference people and build unity on how to work together to make decision for their community activities with using the saving fund form solar battery charging station. Fund from saving is used for community spirit development and physical development such as support to village-hall meeting materials or ceremony, repair road or school or send villagers to get training from outside to import knowledge and skill to share in their community. Children 3-6 per family have light to study at night and see TVs or listen to the radios to access information for growth in 21 st. century.
For long term benefit of the project are community can use fund saved to build their members capacity in term of agriculture, fish raising or other skill for generate income for the families. Fund for green energy committee will be bigger and can be use for community soft loan or any development activities in the future. This project also a unique projects that other NGOs or donors, private sector go to visit and learn or duplicate for future. This project had reduced CO2 35.38567 tones per year or 20035.366 m3 CO2 volumes per year for the 25 years project will contribute a lot to the climate change. This can help to reduce CO2 and introduce the new ideas to the worlds.
