Agro-biodiversity Conservation through Sustainable Land Management in Abajime Watershed

The project will be carried out on Abajime watershed with the general objective of conserving and managing the biodiversity resources of Choke area through integrated on-farm conservation approach. The mode of project implementation is by empowering the local community through education and practice and decentralization of all activities to watershed levels in order to achieve improvements in key areas of environmental problems that affect their livelihoods.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Awareness creating sessions will be organized involving the community and relevant stakeholders on which discussions will be held on global environment and related issues.

On top of addressing bio-diversity and land degradation issues, the project also addresses livelihood issues of the community.

Capacity - Building Component

The local government and the Addis Ababa University (academia institution) will assist in building the community's and the cooperative's capacity.

Gender Focus

The project addresses both men and women issues in the project area.

Notable Community Participation

The project idea emanated from the community and developed with the support of the local government and Addis Ababa University. The community will also participate actively in the project implementation and monitoring tasks.

Policy Impact

This small initiative support by GEF SGP will help the local and regional government to take forward the success achieved and replicate it in the region both in Choke and other eco systems.

Project Results

* 10 modern beehives have been purchased and distributed.
* 16 ha of land has been protected through area closure.
* 5 days of training have been given on fuel saving stove production.
* 25 ha community woodlot has been established.
* Farmers varieties have been multiplied on 10 ha of land.
* 8500 m of compost has been produced.
* 1650 highland fruit tree seedlings have been produced.
* 160 ha of bund has been constructed.
* 1 environmental school group has been established.
* 220 community members, CBO members and local administrators have received training on relevant environmental issues, increasing the community's awareness in biodiversity and conservation practices.
