Hospital Waste Management in Liaqat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) Hospitals
Hospital Waste Management in Liaqat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) Hospitals
Hospital waste is a special type of waste that is generated in relatively small quantities as compared to the domestic, institutional and commercial waste. Inspite of being hazardous and containing infectious components, this waste is not properly being taken care of by the hospital management and there are no formal mechanism / disposal sites available by and large in the country with the exception of very hospitals.
The project is aimed at improving HWM process in its entire life cycle at the target hospitals in Hyderabad and Jamshoro. Major anticipated outputs of the project are;

?Improved hygiene and sanitary conditions at the hospitals
?Reduction in scavenging and illegal use of syringes etc
?Reduction in diseases such as Hep B & C by the way of limiting reuse of syringes, OT instruments etc.
The proposed activity is linked to the objectives of GEF SGP thematic areas. Hospital waste is generally burned in open dumps creating human health hazards in terms of poor air quality and land degradation. Specific Objectives of the project are:
1.Understand Hospital waste management picture in true context through a robust baseline study.
2.Sensitization the need of hospital waste management to its primary and secondary stakeholders and capacity building to achieve project objectives and future sustainability
3.Reduce contaminated streams of Hospital waste by applying waste segregation principle.
4.Develop systems and process to eliminate where possible or materially reduce bad or illegal practices involved in the Hospital Waste Management Life cycle process (e.g. scavenging of
5.Integrate HWM requirements in the context of Hospital Waste Management Rule 2005, in the normal business of Hospital Administration at LUMHS
