Solid Waste management in Hawf Protected Area
Hawf Protected Area was declared in 2005. Hawf PA being located at the extreme east of Yemen close to the Sultanate of Oman border considers the eastern door to Yemen. Solid waste is one of the problems faced by local communities in the urban and rural areas. Plastic bags covering trees and shrubs and Cattle and Camels ingesting them cause disturbance of the natural scenery and mortality of animal.
Local community represented in the three NGOs wanted to address the problem through improving collection system, disposal in the dump place, recycling, raise awareness among tourists and resident alike on the impact of solid waste. Wider public awareness with campaigns will help to maintain the protected area clean to emphasis its protection status.
