Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

A CBO consisting of 80 % women which was established in this initiative has a committee of motivated youth who are determined to attend to the urgent needs of the village as well as some welfare activities. They are now confident enough to field a member (a young woman) to contest the District Council elections this year so that she would be able to address needs such as a road among other urgent requirements of this marginalized village. The revolving fund which was created with a starting capital of Rs. 100,000 is utilized by the farmers for small loans starting with Rs.5000 for buying of seeds for cultivation or self employment activities. Due to demand this facility will be developed by the CBO for future lending activities. Farmers who built stone fences and carried out organic farming using tank fed irrigation practices are happy to note that their lands which had earlier been arid and rocky were now fertile and productive and yielding a good harvest of vegetables which sold in the local market for a good price Now that the project has adequately addressed the rehabilitation of land which was their big problem the villagers are confident that they can hereafter look after themselves and need no outside assistance

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Majority of the participants are indigenous people of the area. Most of the time all the family members take part in the implementation activities of the project.

Obtaining services from the state officials as well as voluntary participation. Establishment of revolving fund.

Replication of project activities

Seeing the positive results enjoyed by the project beneficiaries non beneficiaries from the project area are sending in written requests for help to build water tanks and rock fences .Already the project team has received 98 request for water tanks and 108 requests for rock fences

Notable Community Participation

The project was successful in getting the community to participate in the construction phase of the project . 400 people from the community worked for 20 days laying the pipes for the water scheme .

Capacity - Building Component

The project helped the farmers to improve their practical knowledge in agriculture . They learnt new soil conservation methods to reduce run off and erosion and stabilize soil , such as contour trenches ,rubble bunds ,live hedges Rain water harvesting tanks built under the project has helped 10 families to overcome their water problems . A CBO established under the project with a revolving fund has provided financial stability to the members . Rs 100,000 provided as starting capital has enabled members to obtain d small loans of about Rs 5000 to start self employment activities

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Many families have reduced their household expenses on vegetables from improved home gardens

Gender Focus

Women actively engaged in the agricultural activities and new methods introduced by the project. They played a major role in improving the home gardens with mixed cropping and use of compost . The women constitute 80% of the CBO and. They are now confident enough to field a member (a young woman) to contest the District Council elections this year so that she would be able to address needs such as a road among other urgent requirements of this marginalized village.

Project Results

? People are now using soil conservation methods and have built approximately 4000 ft of live fences and 10,000 ft of stone hedges using the rocks freely available in the area
? There are 10 model home gardens with rain water rain water harvesting tanks
? 60 farmers claim that their lands are now productive and yielding good harvest
? 54 acres of paddy lands which lay fallow for 25 years are now being cultivated due to availability of water
? The CBO is active and has established a Revolving fund scheme
