Households engaged in separation of POPs generated waste are making additional income of about Rs 1000 a month through sale items such as paper ,polythene and plastics collected at household level .
In order to generate participation and commitment they brought in all the stakeholders of the community into a common forum and encouraged open discussions . There were field level officials of the Municipal Council ,Health officials and Divisional secretariat staff officials from the Electricity Board and Base hospital , community groups , school children & teachers in the project area and for 4 groups of farmers identified . At one conference where the findings and recommendations were presented to key stakeholders the group discussions centered round important themes These discussion were very interactive with ample space given to high light and priorities the burning issues relating to POPs and to come up with possible solutions.
Capacity - Building Component
Project stakeholders of the Municipal council, Ceylon Electricity board, MOH office, District Hospital and the DSD office is fully aware about POP?s issues, solutions and appropriate action.District hospital of Nuwara Eliya has received POP?s related waste collection and management support/knowledge from the project.
The building site completed at the hospital was seen to be viable and useful to the Municipal officials in managing waste and facilitating.
The project showed stakeholders how important it was to control POP?s and limit the damage to the environment. By doing this there was local ownership as everyone felt the need to contribute to reduce the problem
Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment
The awareness raising workshops on PoPs and its effects on the local and global environment will be presented to the project stakeholders. Since the effects of PoPs has a direct impact on the global environmental condition it will help the stakeholders to understand the broad concept of global environment protection.
Inovative Financial Mechanisms
The local partner NGO will be benefited by way of managing the project funds which in a way a contribution to capacity building of local project partner.
Policy Impact
The proposed project activities, once implemented would help in improving the policy on environment specially to reduce the negative impacts of PoPs. It is also expected that National Action Plan on reduction of PoPs would be strengthen by implementing the local projects of this nature. Relevant stakeholders such as the Ministry of Environment, the Electricity Board, the Local Authority and others will get involved in a policy dialog workshop.
Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples
There is no specific indigenous community groups exist in the project area. Hence, the above aspect is not applicable to the project.
Project sustainability
This is a long-term investment in which awareness is the first stage. In the future an increase in action to control this problem is expected. The measures taken by the Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council to separate waste will have positive results in the future.

This program can continue in Nuwara Eliya in the future but the results depend on the interest and initiatives taken by the key stakeholders.
Replication of project activities
This project is one which can be replicated within the country and also in other countries. The project is based mainly on awareness workshops and streamlined actions. Considering the success the project has had it would be a useful to replicate the model to increase awareness of POP?s creation in open dumping of waste.
Policy Influence
Under the project Policy Implementation related workshops were conducted with key partners allowed from professors at local Universities such as University of Kelaniya, key participation University of Sri Jayawardanapura and active involvement from the National Environmental Authority.
Gender Focus
Women were expected to play a major role in the project aim to encourage compost making and organic farming

* 2000 households and business groups in Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council area received POP?s related information and waste management facilities
* Project stakeholders of the Municipal council, Ceylon Electricity board, MOH office, District Hospital and the DSD office is fully aware about POP?s issues, solutions and appropriate action
* About 5000 community members of Nuwara Eliya was made aware about POP?s issues, solutions and appropriate action during the Vasantha Udana festival in April 2009
* District hospital of Nuwara Eliya has received POP?s related waste collection and management support/knowledge from the project.
* The building site completed at the hospital was seen to be viable and useful to the Municipal officials in managing waste and facilitating POP reduction
Also awareness was the main outcome. Following the project activities all stakeholders in the Nuwara Eliya area were well of POP?s if waste is not properly disposed informed of the harmful effects and issues. Municipal council, Ceylon Electricity board, MOH office, District Hospital and the DSD office is fully aware about POP?s issues, solutions and appropriate action
