Water Harvest in Hawf Protected Area
Hawf Protected Area (HPA) is located in Hawf district Al-Mahara Governorate in the extreme east of Yemen close to border with the Sultanate of Oman. It was declared as PA in 2005. The area is heavily vegetated due to monsoon during July ?September season. Water shortage prevails during the rest of the year. Communities are forced to bring water by cars or on the back of donkeys from distance away that can reach 4 Km.
Local Communities in the targeted villages identify water harvest from their houses roofs is the principle solution to their water shortage problem. The water is mainly used for domestic use where as animals drink at the water point in the distant Wadi away. The project aimed at building 23 cisterns with total water capacity of 837 m3.
The project aimed at capacity building for four local masons to visit other areas in Yemen to learn from experience and to copy lesson learnt.
