Marine Turtle conservation and awareness through community participation in Maharashtra
Marine Turtle conservation and awareness through community participation in Maharashtra
The main objective of the project is in-situ and ex-situ protection of endangered Olive Ridley Turtles on Maharashtra Coastline; and promotion of alternate sustainable livelihood activities in the area.
A combination of strategies will be used to achieve the goals of the project:-
1. In situ and ex-situ conservation for immediate protection of nesting sites. This will directly help in conservation of Olive Ridley Turtle on west coast. About 50 nesting sites have already been identified in different parts and roughly 2000 hatchlings were protected per year. Project will help to reach further sites in remote places.
2. Networking with people and organizations.
3. Olive Ridley and other turtles have tendency to aggregate on some specific spots for nesting sites than other. Eg. Velas village in the organization?s work area has 31 nests out of 50 nests that the organization is protecting presently. So this village is of special significance for long term conservation. Such sites will be identified by survey methods. By using PRA methods and microplanning exercise, a detailed conservation and alternate livelihood plan will be developed for three sites.
