Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The creation of an extensive regional network of organic agriculture that is actively driven can set the seed literally for its large scale adoption. The continuous mobilization of the beneficiaries will act as a training of trainer?s programme that will strengthen skills and lay the foundation for an ongoing activity. The actual transition towards organic agriculture can only be successful if it manifests as a grass roots movement that is backed by a strong central player. Further the opening up of opportunities for exposure to training, international trade fairs, certification and standards here again on the grass roots levels can truly set the seed of sustainability to a movement such as this.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The funds will be used in a greatly decentralized fashion whereby the regional centres will share a small part of the funds for the regional promotion of organic agriculture. They will thus be responsible for the expenditure and accounting for the funds disbursed.

Gender Focus

The percentage of women farmers in the movement is more than 50%. Further the Project seeks to engage more women specifically to take on the mantle of leadership for the promotion of organic food amongst mothers and children.

Policy Impact

a) Lobbying for the inclusion of organic agriculture as an important aspect of the National Agricultural Policy. b) Drawn up the Guidelines for the certification of organic agriculture on a request by the Ministry of Environment c) Prepared the National Standards for the certification of Organic Agriculture through the Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI)

Notable Community Participation

a) The selection of the organizations or individuals who form the regional centers are all associated with the diverse organizations that unite to form LOAM. b) The entire programme revolves around the community and their participation is therefore integral to the sustainability of the project. c) The benefits the community will gain are multi faceted and include tangible economic gains, ecological stability and social security. d) The establishment of organic agriculture in different eco zones will result in a vast amount of data collected specifically to crops and crop biodiversity and their management

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

a) To provide an opportunity for members to attend international workshops and trade fairs on organic agriculture and establish links. b) The website is a portal to those on the international scene to browse through in order to gain an understanding of organic agriculture in Sri Lanka. It will also serve as a clearing house for inquiries since the LOAM office will transfer any enquiries through its regional network. c) The publishing of a newsletter will supplement the information needs of those who do not have access to computers and email like farmers for Instance.

Capacity - Building Component

a) A fully functional office that can respond to the needs of a large scale initiative. b) To establish a link with local exporters in order to provide information on product availability and serve as a hub for effective marketing. d) To monitor and evaluate organic cultivation programmes both in the regional centers and those of external growers.
