Using the natural gas to reduce the air pollution

Promoting the concept of alternative transport by adding the natural gas component to vehicles thereby mitigating green house gas emissions

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

- 2 workshops were conducted for the training of 30 young men on the operation and maintenance of natural gas units - Trainees were given manuals for the operation of the units

Policy Impact

- Promotion of clean and inexpensive transport - Sensitizing of local community to the dangers of green house gas emissions and the importance of alternative transport - Mitigating the consequences of climate change through the reduction of pollution

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

- Public awareness of Global Environment was promoted through 10 seminars and 2 conferences. Participants were informed about Climate Change and the Green House Effect among other subjects - An awareness raising initiative was conducted in a number of schools. Students were asked to create an environmental magazine - Large media coverage was provided for this project by Egypt's leading newspaper Al Ahram, two other newspapers, and the national radio station

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

-30 natural gas units were installed in the vehicles thereby contributing to the mitigation of green house gas emissions - Cleaner air means better health conditions of the community - Since the cost of natural gas is very low, car owners/drivers can save on their resources to meet other needs

Notable Community Participation

-Members of the community attended 10 seminars aimed at promoting the project and explaining its objectives and activities - Members of the community participated in a greening initiative which entailed the planting of 400 trees in the target areas -Project participants attended the opening and closing conferences

Project sustainability

-The sustainability of the project is guaranteed through the mechanism of revolving funds - The awareness raising component has a long term impact on the behavior of the community
