Community Ecological Governance for Biodiversity Conservation for Tharaka District
The project will mobilize and sensitize the community in Tharaka District on conservation of sacred sites.
Specific objectives of the project include:
?To strengthen the traditional governance structure of the Tharaka people as a vehicle for implementation of the project
? To support a process of strengthening ownership of local territory through production of a community map of all sacred sites and biodiversity-rich hills
? Support a community-based momentum for rehabilitation of degraded ecosystems
? Facilitate development of innovative seed management practices in the area to address food insecurity
? Support recognition and strengthening of the role of women in heritage management
Expected results include:
? 10 sacred sites will be protected and documented
? 100 people (10 from each sacred site) will be exposed to diverse skills in participatory process, livelihood improvement, tree raising and management, as the knowledge of the general community as regards the sites will be documented.
? An ecological map of Tharaka showing key ecological, resource, cultural and livelihood areas will be developed for advocacy and learning
? Youth and elders will have an opportunity to share through intergenerational dialogues where elders will sensitize the youth on value of sacred sites in protection of local biodiversity
? 2 cultural celebrations will be held in the area to provide an opportunity for exchange of ideas and inspiration
? Elders share their knowledge with the youth
? 5 exchange visits will be organized between participating sites
? Space of women in bio-heritage management recognized and respected
? Booklet and documentary on experiences and results of the project
