Makambako Shallow Wells Project
Makambako Shallow Wells Project
Like most areas in Tanzania, Makambako is facing an acute problem of water. Due to its town-like settlement, potential donor agencies tend to by-pass it for more rural areas. The proposed project submitted by the local communities through UCRAS will contribute to easing water woos in Makambako and increase the number of people with access to clean and sage water within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The Ubena Cultural Reforms Association (UCRAS) was registered in 2006. It is involved in the preservation and promotion of culture while conserving traditional water sources. Through own voluntary efforts, UCRAS has already managed to conserve 6 water sources in and around Makambako.

The project main objective is to reduce pressure on available water sources by increasing water supply for the people in the community through drilling of shallow wells.

Implementation Strategy:

The supported project will enhance availability of water and improve sanitation through the following strategies.

1. Drilling of three shall wells fitted with hand pumps
2. Establishment of a water vending kiosk
3. Training of attendants to increase O & M skills
4. Establishment of a Water Users Group (WUG) for orderly management of the scheme
5. Introduce user fees for sustainability purposes
