Mokotjomela Environmental Protection and Development Project

Conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in Mount Moorosi, a mountain with historical background and cultural heritage, through awareness and education, establishment of a botanical garden and sale of natural products from the botanical garden. The current phase of the project will focus on planning and capacity building.

Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

A consensus building workshop is one of the major activities undertaken during sensitization and planning phase to reach consensus on what sustainable livelihoods strategies and activities to build into the project proposal

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Herders or herd boys as they are commonly called have a key role to play in the successful implementaion of the propose project, as they are the main users of rangelands - the proposed project site is part of the grazing area.

Gender Focus

Khotla Moreneng is a community Group comprising men, women and youth groups and herders groups among others. This means the proposed project will cater for all goups of the community, including the vulnerable.

Notable Community Participation

Khotla Moreneng, a community group which has partnered with ADAAL in other development activities in Mt. Moorosi will play a major role in community mobilization and project implementation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

THe Mount Moorosi community was involved throughout the project cycle (conception, planning etc.) as such they are the ones who identified the environmental problem and its sources and also contributed towards proposal of interventions to be put in place to address the identified environmental problem.

Capacity - Building Component

The Grantee ADAAL and its grass-root partner were involved through the process of project proposal development and as such have gained some projet proposal development skills; and also the key issues to consider in developing a community natural resources management project.

Activities Performed under this Agreement: Planning and development of a full proposal

Results:

? The proposal has been developed and submitted for the implementation of the programme

? Knowledge and understanding of the implementation plan of the project

? Identification of potential sites for establishment of a nursery for the protection of aloe as a main natural resource

New Developments and unexpected difficulties/problems:

There have been no difficulties except to simplify the proposal for the understanding of the grass roots communities who are the beneficiaries and implementers and denial of some members of the council to accept the project.

Actions taken to solve them:

Meeting with the consultant was held and the document was simplified.
Meeting with the Community Council was held and issues of administration addressed. The Councilor convinced the other members of her participation and the benefits for the whole community. Explanation on division of power was made and misunderstandings solved.

Remarks/lesson learned:

It is very important to include and involve the full participation of the local structures in development of a community project.
