enhancing the coastal community participation in conservation and sustainabdle use of mangrove forests through silviculture innovations.
The proposed project aims at a holistic approach of addressing mangrove deforestation through capacity building to the fisher community (women, youth, men) on sustainable use of mangroves through alternative livelihoods like silviculture along the Kenyan Coast. This will be achieved through extensive environmental educational activities and experience-based learning, basic participatory research at community level as well as Community empowerment, livelihood initiatives and Natural Resource Management strategies. The community will be involved in three silviculture activities (bee keeping, fish/crab farming and mangrove planting/management) which are in line with the Small Grants country program.
Overall, the project will target to reduce the vulnerability of the mangrove wetland brought by indiscriminate mangrove cutting as a result of extreme poverty of families thriving in Kenyan coast by bringing in direct income opportunities to these local communities capitalizing from this wetland and other complimentary natural resources thereby improving their way of living.

Project Characteristics and Results
Notable Community Participation
A steering committee will be formed comprised of ?
The planning and review meetings will be organized with the involvement of all the stakeholders and the technical team. The role of PIC will be in making crucial decisions regarding the project. Identification of mangrove sites where the project will be implemented will be done by the silviculture experts in collaboration with the community and government departments.
Proposed PIC will comprise 8 members derived from;
a) 2 Community ? Makongeni conservation group & Upendo women group
b) 3 Kwetu staff- Kwetu Chairman, Project Manager & Mariculture Coordinator
c) 1 Fisheries officer- Representing fisheries department
d) 1 Forestry officer ? Representing Kenya Forestry Service
e) 1 NEMA representative
The project will be implemented on three community sites hence 100% involvement; in addition the community members will be managing the sites.
Technical teams comprising of all stakeholders (GoK ministries, community groups, CSO?s cooperate sector) will be formed. There will be an extensive group of government and non-government institutions involved in project implementation. This will depend on the interest of each group in silviculture, conservation, environment, mangrove wetlands, capacity building and administration.
Groups will be required to write brief reports on their projects as a way of offering them basic training while a major component of report production will be done by Kwetu. Also the environmental challenge will be open to the community to encourage interaction and meet with a number of stakeholders to share their project experiences.
The participating groups will be advised to register formally with the ministry of social services hence giving legal operation in the activities being undertaken .
Gender Focus
Most of the active members of the groups that participate in this project are women, and should receive an appropriate proportion of the benefits.
