Revival of the outrun cattle-breading and localization of the pastures degradation in a dry-steppe zone of Central Kazakhstan, by the example of Aktobek settlement
The project carried out in a dry-steppe geographical region of the Central Kazakhstan. The feature of the area is that earlier, when a virgin soil is developed, the pastures have been ploughed up for grain crops growing. Mass ploughing up of the virgin lands and long-term cultivation of monoculture has led to arable land degradation, decrease in crops. Large areas have been brought out of agricultural turn into a long-fallow land. Actually, now they are wastelands. The area of such wastelands round the Aktubek settlement is 5-6 thousand hectares. There is a strong necessity to restore them for further use as pastures.
Project aim and tasks:
The project intends to revive the outrun cattle breading and return of the wastelands to the agricultural turnover for prevention of the pastures degradation and irrational haylands use through environmentally-safe technologies and alternative energy resources use by means of 1) arrangement of pastures turnover on the outrun territories of 1000 hectares and 50% decrease of pressure on the pastures round the settlement, 2) creation of sowing haylands on the territory of 100 hectares of the fallow-lands, 3) demonstration and sharing experience gained from introduction of the pastures land degradation decreasing technologies and fallow lands developing.
Project results:
- 1000 hectares of the outrun pastures with high forage reserve put into pastures turnover
- The infrastructure of the outrun areas restored by local community
- Cattle loading on the pastures round the settlement decrease for 50 % due to partial movement of the cattle to the outrun pastures
- 100 hectares of hayfields created with expected yield of 10-12 ts/hectare.
- The efficiency of the degraded areas rose for 20 %.
