Develop, Design and Test in a Particpatry manner a " River Health Index" (RHI) as a tool for Prioritization, Restoration and Conservation of River Ecosystems.

Project's Objective is to
a.To help safeguard the future of all rivers in the country as ecological and economic entities in their own right;
b.To establish the river as a unique ecosystem in its own right with conservation needs that go much beyond the hitherto limited efforts of river cleaning with an assumption that rivers are no more than a channel for conveyance of water from their origin to confluence with another river or in to the seas.
Project Outputs
a. development of a River Health Index (RHI);
b. development of capacity for prioritization, restoration and conservation of rivers.

a. literature review, expert consultations;
b. devising a River Health Index system;
c. field trials in selected river habitats;
d. incorporation of findings;
e. wider dissemination of RHI technique;

Project Characteristics and Results

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Rivers are an integral part of local,regional and global cliamatic systems.The project shall attempt to establish this role in much clearer terms and provide a tool that could be used also as a monitor of the state of climatic change and its impacts,both at regional and at global level.Suitable adaptation and mitigation strategies could be developed and promoted based on lessons and learnings from the process of revival of rivers using the prioritization oppurtunity provided by the use of RHI.

Notable Community Participation

The role of communitites, shall be most pronounced during the field testing of the version 1 of the River Health Index (RHI) with respect to the river Yamuna. Their suggestions and inputs shall be most useful.

Capacity - Building Component

Workshops are being conducted.Organic farming is being promoted by curbing the use of modern inputs like inorganic fertilizer, pesticides/weedicides.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

no this project does not have association with indegenous people as the river Yamuna does not flow through areas predoninantly inhabited by them.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

one of the livelihood impacts of this project is in the promotion of organic / natural farming, that has important implications for both , the health of the river and the health of the people involved. in future too the institutions called the Nadi Mitra Mandali dvevloped during the project implementation to work on the pramotion of natural farming practices as well as use of the alternative forms of energy, which are in our understanding the key pillars of sustained and helthy lifestyles for the future..

Gender Focus

the project did not have any specific gender focus, the subject matter of the project brought the same in. despite a lack of focus it was the project executants' endeavour to involve women folk whatever it was possible since women folk in many rural societies still hesitate to venture out and participate actively in public discussions.

Policy Impact

this projec t has influenced the government policy. while the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests MOEF has a National River conservation Directorate (NRCD)The project and its sister Campaign, namely the Yamuna jiye Abhiyaan endeavored to highlight the rivers as ecosystem and have consistently apealed to various authrities to work towards a policy and a legislation for the rivers.

Project Results

? Established a network of national, state, local level of experts NGOs
? CBOs and interested people willing to take the initiative forward beyond the project's life, in terms of capacity enhancement activities, security of river dependent ecologically sound livelihood applications and application of RHI to other rivers and lining RHI with climate change monitoring. Involve all types of religious.
? Institutions to influence river conservation practices.
? Focus on the use pattern of water through wells, ground water extraction, Irrigation and agricultural practices.
? Undertook action based programs with schools, college students and civil society to arouse their Sensitivity for care of the rivers. The volunteers were known as 'NadiMitra' at 14 sites Nadimitra Mandli ( Friends of the river) were formed at 14 sites (Called (GRID) along the 1400 km long river.
? Nine NMMs were registered in the year 2010 as cooperative societies. .
? Development of River Health Indes (RHI) approach in a participatory manner. RHI report on river Yamuna as a test case.
