Liquidation of the consequences of irrational use of biological resources within important bird area, lake Koshkarkol, restoration of its biodiversity by implementing the sustainable fishery modules
Alakol-Sasykkol wetlands are located in Almaty and East Kazakhstan areas where more than 250 birds species. 19 of them are rare ones. Intensive fishing on the lakes has led to exhaustion of fish stocks, disappearance of many valuable kinds of fish. Reduction of fish stocks in the Alakol-Sasykkol lakes system brings damage to the unique biodiversity of the wetlands.
Project aim:
To conserve and rehabilitate the Koshkarkol lake biodiversity, to develop and implement sustainable fishery management methods that don?t cause damage to the natural resources, including those increasing valuable and food species of the fish resources and decreasing trade load on the lake.
Project tasks:
- Conservation and restoration of the Koshkarkol lake biodiversity
- The restoration, reproduction and development of valuable commercial species of fish. Sustainable management of fisheries
- Solving the socio-economic problems, improving the living standards of local population
Project results:
- Decreasing of loading on the Koshkarkol lake ecosystem due to reduction of illegal fishing and hunting
- Creation of favorable conditions and forage maintenance of migrating birds in nesting time. Increasing number of the rare, especially protected, 12 kinds of birds
- Building and introduction of incubatory shop
- Restoration and increasing of valuable trade kinds of fish
- Opening of new 16-18 workplaces for local population
