Hot water from the hot sun (Demonstration of possibilities for solar energy use for hot water supply of the public service institutions in Almaty city)

At the moment there is only one traditional way of hot water supply to administrative buildings through centralized water supply system, but it?s very expensive. The project offers to construct the water supply (helio) system based on solar energy use on several administrative buildings. It will allow reducing the water heating costs and promoting several times reduction of the green gas emissions.

Also to widely share the information about the advantages of the solar energy use an information campaign will be arranged all over the country. Besides, consulting and excursion activity will be implemented to invite the interested audience to the project territory to the purpose of acquaintance with the helio-systems work principle and benefits it could bring.

Project aim:
To demonstrate possibilities of solar energy use by installing a solar plant to provide 2 administrative buildings in Almaty with hot water.

Project tasks:
- Organization of access to hot water through installation of solar plants in REC TsA and Station of Young Naturalists;
- Carrying out of PR campaign to popularize ideas and disseminate experience and outcomes of the project.

Project results:
- 2 solar helio-systems are installed on the territory of CAREC and Young environmentalists station
- Over 200 people will be supplied with hot water
- Methodical brochure on solar helio-system is published and spread out among the decision-making focal points
- Special edition of ?Environment and Society? devoted to is published and widely spread out
- Press-conference on practical steps for alternative energy sources implementation is arranged
- Training on helio-system use and maintenance is arranged
- Special publications on solar energy use advantages is placed on www.econavigator.com, www.carec.kz

Notable Community Participation

For local residents a wide information campaign will be arranged to acquaint them with all the details of the project, fully explain the benefits of the helio-systems use. All the interested people will be consulted on the solar helio-systems use. Also for involving of the population special excursions will be arranged to the territory of CAREC and Young Environmentalists Station to demonstrate the practical experience of the helio-systems use. It is necessary to notice that placing of helio-system on the territory of Young Environmentalists Station will allow to considerably increasing involvement of schoolchildren and teachers out of other schools to the project.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

REC TsA is the only large ecological center in Kazakhstan; at the same time is serves as a testing ground for implementation of new environmentally clean technologies. Installation of solar batteries will allow demonstrating, in full measure, the ability to use alternative sources of energy. In the Station of Young Naturalists there is a hot-house and zoological hobby group, which are declining due to insufficient funding. Children (mostly girls) participating in the activities of the zoological hobby group have to take care of their pets and sites of their location using cold water. Installation of solar batteries will allow the Station to carry out its activities effectively and with minimum financial expenses, while successfully operating nursery for animals will serve as a good example for similar organizations.

Capacity - Building Component

Raising awareness of the general public with regard to abilities of using solar energy by means of conducting an information campaign (issue and duplication of the manual, publishing and dissemination of the special issue of ?Ecology and Society? magazine; holding of a press-conference, training seminars., etc.) and demonstration of the solar energy use for water heating in practice allow increase public knoweledge in these fields.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

To promote wide public awareness about the alternative energy sources use a wide informational campaign will be arranged: special methodical brochure on solar helio-system will be published and spread out among the decision-making focal points in local authorities, special edition of ?Environment and Society? devoted to is published and widely spread out, press-conference on practical steps for alternative energy sources implementation will be arranged, special publications on solar energy use advantages will be placed on environmental Internet sites: www.econavigator.com, www.carec.kz.
