Biodiversity conservation through the promotion of organic tea by Sabaragamu Janatha Padanama.

Bio diversity conservation through community participation for the activities - establishment of 8 km live fence, convertion of 25 acres of small holder tea lands to organic tea lands and promotion of organic farming practices, establishment of a revolving fund and establishment of a micro hydro power station for lighting for 35 households.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Public awareness will be created through several workshops and publication of a book.

Notable Community Participation

This project spreads out 02 villages, and 80% of them have used P.V.C pipes in a disorganized manner to supply water. They are contributing these pipes and fittings for this project.

Three workshops will be conducted on water management and environment.

Project sustainability

`Sri Cert? (the Sri Lankan organization that is internationally accepted for certifying organic products ) will certify the organic produce as marketing plans to the factory that had promised to supply a steady market has failed. The organization together with project beneficiaries has thought of a more sustainable method of `Handmade Bio Teas? that will be produced in the households it self which is now being promoted. There is a commitment by the communities to safeguard the buffer zone vegetation as they have benefited from the supply of water for cultivation and domestic use from this. Small commercial crops are grown by the people that they can harvest for domestic use and for sales by the society. The sales outlet in the Ratnapura town run by the organization also ensures that the Kitul and other products of the beneficiaries of this project have a wider and steady market.

Project Results

? A well demarcated boundary established by an aware and respectful community who have stopped all encroachments and will benefit from the live fence in time to come.
? The biodiversity of the reserve is made safer and threats such as encroachment and indiscriminate use of the forest products are reduced by the community that now understands the value of the area and its importance to biodiversity.
? Transformation of tea growers to reduce the use of agro chemicals and use their own compost as fertilizer reducing cost of production in the cultivation of tea which is their main livelihood. This also results in the reduction of threats to biodiversity.
? More marketable shelf ready Kitul products and spices. . The producers were Linked to the island wide organic producers Network ?through Siyalaka Gami Nipayum Hala which is run by the NGO and coordination and marketing and promoting buyers to purchase the products is all done by them.
? Improved health standards and time saving and efficiency in the use of water for domestic and agricultural purposes in the village of Mahayaya.
? Cost efficiency in tea cultivation by using compost instead of purchasing chemical fertilizers.
? Rs. 20/- per month is collected for the water consumption by the society which goes towards the maintenance of the water supply scheme.
