This project aimed to conserve the Mauritian Echo Parakeet (Psittacula eques echo), the last surviving representative of a genus that was once abundant in the Western Indian Ocean, now the rarest and most endangered bird in the Mascarenes, and one of the world's rarest parrots. It also aimed to enhance reproduction in the wild and in captivity, to increase the wild population and establish a captive population at the Black River Gorges National Park. With only 8 individuals in 1986, there are now 96 Echo Parakeets, some of which are in the wild. GEF/SGP Grant used for nest monitoring, trial releases and limited telemetry work.
