Community Forest of Phu Toei Community
Location of project: An integrated portion of forest ecosystems in the Indo-Chinese sub-region bio-unit?s Indochina in the vicinity of Sai Yoke National Park. During the economic downturn of 1996-1997, unemployment had resulted in snatch of natural resources in forest ecosystems. In order to cope with the situation, FADW had coordinated with the national park to survey and demarcate an area of 60 ha to be a community forest and as well as a learning centre for biological diversity.

Target Population: 600 families with 2,400 members in three villages of Baan (village) Phu Mude, Phu Toei and Phu Lard the majority of whom earn their living through agricultural practice and providing general service. Of these 100 families are direct participants of the project.

Main Activities:
1. Building capacity of core leaders to be effective resources persons on community forest
2. Training on native species reproduction and sustainable use
3. Launching reforestation of rare species, and species with medicinal value including returning three native species of orchid to their original habitats
4. Upgrading Nature Study Trail and building seven humid retaining weirs
5. Disseminating project result

Main Anticipated Result:
1. Increased capacity of at least 10 core leaders and 15 youth members witnessed by ability to present and discuss data & information about species in community forest
2. Collection of seedlings commonly used by communities: 10 species of tree, nine species of medicinal value, and three species of native orchids
3. Evident increase of plant species which communities and animals are able to make use of
4. Emergence of a learning centre and nature study trail any community members can learn from
5. Documentation on local knowledge in using plant species
