Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Further Training of Reef keeper field crews. Providing reef conservation and restoration training to SL Navy and DWLC staff. Providing computer training program for children at Rumassala. provide training in marine life identification for Dive operator community in Unawatuna to enhance the tourism potential.

Improved condition of the coral reef would lead to a significant improvement of the livelihood potential of the communities associated with local fishery and tourism.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The development of coral reef restoration exercises would be useful in raising coral reef awareness globally and at local scales. Significant effort would be put in to conduct workshops and video shows to raise awareness and promote conservation. Providing reef conservation and restoration training to SL Navy and DWLC staff. Provide training in marine life identification for Dive operator community in Unawatuna to enhance the tourism potential of the community.

The fishermen ladies community groups would be strengthened.

Notable Community Participation

The project would be operated primarily by crew of individuals from Rumassala hill area. who would carry out the main restoration program. Already established fishermen ladies community groups would be strengthened. The participation of SL Navy in the program, both at Rumasala and Tangalle is hoped to provide significant advantage as it is expected to sensitize Navy staff in reef conservation.

Project sustainability

The survival and re-growth of the reef and restoration of the functions of the reef provide long term benefits to both natural resources and communities in Rumassla. The team is promoting supporting its field activities through linking them with eco-tourism activities in the South Coast as tourism is again becoming a viable option post to the conclusion of the war. The training and facility development at Hikkaduwa is expected to make the DWLC staff be better able to carry out Marine protection and conservation activities with direct long term dividends for coral reefs

Working closely with CCD, DWLC and SL Navy to promote new approaches for adoption, conservation and management policy of coral reef environments.

Project Results

Post to the 1998 being exposed to several massive storm events and the tsunami had significantly reduced the coral cover at Rumassala reef and the Southern coast line in general.
The regular rescue of broken coral has given a new lease of life to hundreds of corals that would have perished otherwise. the over 2400 units of coral re-planted back on to the reef in clusters has provided micro reef environments that would recover and gain a good coral cover within a few years instead of decades and would sustain habitats for many reef fauna and support continuation of the diversity of life while other areas of the reef would recover slowly. the established clusters could provide a source of mother material for replanting rest of the reef area within a short span of time.
The training provided to DWLC staff at Hikkaduwa would provide a strong basis of the DWC as they develop in their role in protecting the marine species and environment in Sri Lanka.
