Demonstration of practical approaches to restore the biodiversity of Jungar Alatau mountain range by developing the economic capacities of Kokzhar village inhabitants
The biodiversity of Dzungarian Alatau is a concentration of rare and endemic species of flora and fauna. However, now owing to a complex of natural and anthropogenous factors the bioresources are on the verge of disappearance and demand immediate measures to be preserved and restored. One of the negative factors influences on the biodiversity of the region is a sharp reduction of natural pollinators, that accordingly leads to deterioration of seeds, reduction of the areas occupied with vegetation (in particular, globally-significant species), low density of plants, absence of shelters and forage for insects and birds. Reproduction of rare species of grasses, bushes and trees suffers as a result. In previous years lack of natural pollinators was substantially compensated by active beekeeping prospering in the region. However, after the USSR collapsed, beekeeping activity has had serious losses. Despite of serious economic complexities in the area, beekeeping has remained, but its development is strongly complicated by a complex of organizational and economic problems.

Project aim:
Create opportunities for rehabilitation of biodiversity of Alakol and Sarkand districts, Almaty area, through activization of the globally significant biodiversity pollination activity through expansion of possibilities for beekeeping development; and also carrying out of informational and educational activity on the project territory.

Project tasks:
The project is directed on strengthening of opportunities of local beekeepers, expansion and intensification of their activity for deficiency indemnification in natural pollinators, and strengthening of restoration processes of wild globally significant species of flora of the area and, at the same time, improvement of economic and social situation of local population.

Project results:
- Expansion of the territory and intensity of the wild-growing grasses, bushes and trees pollinated by bees, including globally significant species and agricultural crops. By 89,000 hectares on the territory of the Kokzhar forest area
- Supply of the beekeepers of Alakol and Sarkand areas of Almaty oblast with joiner's production which is necessary for beekeeping development ? up to 100 beekeepers a year
- Raising profitableness and efficiency of apiaries on the project territory due to usage of the updated equipment. Improvement of economic and social livelihood conditions of local population will occur due to increasing of profitability of apiaries; increasing of quantity and improvement of quality of fruits and seeds
- Increase of density of a vegetative cover will allow increase preparation of hay for winter feeding of cattle. It will allow local residents to grow and sell more high-quality non-polluting agricultural production
- Training of 3 ? 4 local residents to manufacture beehives and other joiner's products necessary for apiary work
- Training of local beekeepers (up to 50 families) in the newest beekeeping processing methods for increasing pollination and both honey and other apiaries production (propolis, flower pollen, honey milk)
- Sustainable and rational use of biodiversity components for increasing of social and economic livelihood of the local population
- Creation of local institutionally substantive group of beekeepers for increase of the work efficiency
