Sustainable Pastoral Management (Demonstration of raising productivity of the degraded wastelands, and creation of high productive pastures through implementation of sustainable pastoral management system on the sample of Birlestyk farm)
Disintegration of state farms on agricultural co-operatives and small farms, privatization, decrease in financial, economic and technical maintenance have led to reduction of the grain crops area, a lot of wastelands have appeared. The project considers a complex of issues that allow choosing optimum variants of pastures management.

Project aim:
Increase efficiency of the degraded laylands and pastures by means of introduction of alternative methods of land tenure.

Project tasks:
-Raising efficiency of the degraded laylands by means of planting of a long term crops adapted to local conditions
-Set up an irrigated pasture on the area of 20 hectares (which will be broken into 4 cages on 5 hectares) sowed by long-term grasses and fenced, with a siphon water supply method
-Involve local population to the project implementation, thereby to provide them with workplaces and to improve their financial and economic position
- Promote successful results for the project all over the area among other farming companies

Project results:
- Permanent grasses sowing allowed lands degradation decreasing
- Created on degraded lands damped sowing lands, rich with nitrogen and rich harvest got
- Round-the-clock pasture organized
- On 20 ha grazing land organized
- Increased productivity of feed crops
- Organized rehabilitation process of degraded lands ? about 15-20 tones of organic matter accumulating annually
- Annual yield of milk increased up to 3500-4000 liter
- Daily live weight gain increased up to 700-800 gram
- Increased public awareness and capacity on environmental issues solving and sustainable development

Project Characteristics and Results
Gender Focus
In the long term the SPK intends to increase a livestock of animals. Thus, 60-80 hectares of wastelands rehabilitated and used for pastures. Accordingly, 25-30 additional work places opened for machine operators, cattlemen, etc. Dominating place taken to women (milkmaids, experts in milk production, etc.) Besides, women involved in wool production, for further felt products realization, that allow families get additional income.
Capacity - Building Component
Informational campaign, public monitoring, project evaluation helped in forming public?s environmental awareness. Birlistik collective plan to implement project measures on additional 60 ha, which will be done by local community?s self-help, because project activities allowed locals get own skills on project measures implementing.
