Energy conservation through up-gradation and modernization of Watermill – A community approach to sustainable action
Objective:
? Conserving energy and improving the efficiency of traditional watermill through up -gradation and modernization.
? Empowerment of local water mills owner, women and members of Panchayat and institutional building
? Economic and social upliftment of local communities by employment generation
? Employment generation through training for nursery raising, shawl & carpet weaving.
? Establishing innovative water heating system

Activities:

-Periodic meetings will be held with PRIs, SHGs, and Gharat owners
-A workshop on energy conservation will be organized to build the capacity of the members of Panchayati Raj Institution, Self Help Groups and water mill owners for institutional building and community ownership.
-Energy auditing of the village will be done in 132 Hose holds in the 1st and 2nd year.
-IEC material will be developed for dissemination of technical know-how and issues of energy conservation. This would include 1000 posters and 2000 hand outs.
-Up-gradation/construction and renovation of water mills.
-Installation of machinery: Pre installation survey will be done. Designing, lay out plan, installation and in situ training will be provided by WWF- India in collaboration with HIMURJA. Identification of water channel length, types of shafts, power output, head range, rotation speed, diameter and type of runner, length, width and types of blades of Gharat will be done.
-Electricity supply (KW) for 20 households: Electricity will be supplied to selected 20 houses through transmission line. Transmission line will be laid in consultation with HIMURJA
-Hot water supply for 10 households: Water will be channelized to nearby 10 houses and innovative water heating system will be developed. This will enhance the better energy efficiency through reduced wood burning for water heating.
-Field visit: Empowerment of local watermill owner, SHG / PRIs members will be done
-Installation of 1 Wool Carding Unit: Electrical supply will be provided to nearby households.
-Demographic survey: A demographic survey will be done in the last phase of the project to know the social and economic upliftment of local community.
-Training would be provided to schedule cast women on Nursery raising, carpet weaving and shawl weaving. Carpet and shawl weaving looms will be purchased from H.P. Handicrafts and Handloom Corporation. After completion of the training looms will be handed over to Self Help Group.

Institution building: The strategy will be based on a perspective of low- income households and marginalized rural communities in order to strength their self help and self reliance capacities through innovative and catalytic action research type of interventions through Village Energy Committee (VEC). The VEC would include members from SHGs, PRI, HIMURJA, DRDA and WWF. VEC will be responsible for Village Micro Planning (VMP), mechanism of cost sharing, wage distribution, operation & maintenance of the up-graded Gharat, water heating system and wool carding unit. etc.

Results:
? 10 KW of electricity generated which would provide pollution-free energy to more than 20 HH and would be a substitute of Kerosene and fuelwood.
? Gharat Upgradation will contribute in reducing fuelwood consumption. This would reduce forest degradation and lead to conservation of 0.5 ha in 1 year.
? Women empowerment and capacity building of stakeholders
? Income generation through flour grinding, oil expelling and wool carding
? Generation for alternate livelihood through nursery raising, shawl and carpet weaving
? Availability of warm water for household activities

Capacity - Building Component
For the capacity building of its members, the NGO organizes time to time meetings of its PRIs, SHGs and Gharat owners. The NGO has also organized a workshops with the of its 53 members on the energy conservation. Also various technical sessions are also being organized for the demonstration of up gradation and modernization of the water mills. To enhance the skills of the schedule caste women the project organizes several training programs for nursery raising and shawl and carpet training. Also the NGO arranges time to time field visits for the exposure of its members.
