Biodiversity Conservation in Community Forests and its use for sustainable Piggery Management and organic farming in 14 villages of East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya
Objective:
To motivate village communities to conserve their forests and use the rich microbial bio-diversity of the forests for enhancing livelihood options.
To train selected village communities in the collection and culturing of Indigenous Micro Organisms (IMO) from community forests and to use them for sustainable organic farming and piggery management.
To document the process and produce a CD of the technologies for further dissemination.
Output:
14 Village Communities motivated to conserve community forests.
SHGs formed, in each village and linked to micro-credit through banks.

?Bokashi? Piggerys and Organic Farms established in 14 villages as micro-enterprises leading to socio-economic development in collaboration with appropriate Government Agencies such as DRDA, Forest Department, Soil & Moisture Conservation Department.
Traditional knowledge on medicinal plants documented particularly in the area of traditional healing practices for piggery.

Selection of project team.
Community mobilization for natural resource mapping and motivating Village Employment Councils (VECs) under NREGA to be the nodal implementing agency in each village.
Formulation of village level plans for conservation of forests.
Implementation of village level plans for conservation.
Formation, grading and credit linking of SHGs ( All new SHGs)
Identifying IMO in selected forests, culturing them and analyzing ingredients.
Setting up a model Bokashi Piggery Units and Organic Farms at Cluster Centres accessible to all villages.
Training of SHG members and individual entrepreneurs at Cluster Centres.
Site Selection for group and individual units in each village.
Micro-enterprise Development training for all SHG members and individuals
Signing Agreements with each SHG ? regarding loan repayment, benefit sharing among the group.
Setting up Bokashi Units and Organic Farm Units at the village level ? SHGs will be gender sensitive and may include persons with disability.
Development of marketing strategy for sale of pigs and organic products.
Documenting traditional knowledge on medicinal plants for healing of animal diseases, especially pigs
Setting up model medicinal plants nurseries and ex-situ conservation.
Linking of project to DRDA and other programmes, especially the Forest Department for scaling up
Developing a set of practices for piggery and organic farming using IMO and capacity building in the same and documenting the same in multimedia
Monitoring & reporting
Workshop on dissemination of the technology to other NGOs/CBOs and developing a strategy for sharing with other NGOs and developing a regional ?Bokashi? network

Capacity - Building Component
The project aims to introduce the advance Bokashi piggery and organic farming in the project area, as such the NGO has a special collaboration with Allahabad Agricultural Institute. The project will organise special training sessions for the disable and women members of the community. The SHG members will also be trained to prepare ?Bokashi? compost using rice husk, soil, charcoal dust, chicken manure, wood ash and bio mass water liquid manures and pesticides, using locally available materials.
