Secondary bogging of exhausted peat field “Ostrovskoe” with the purpose CO2 emission reduction, prevention of peat fires and biodiversity protection.
Project goal: waterlogging of the depleted part of peat bog, restoration of hydrological regime and peat ecosystem on the ?Ostrovskoe? raised bog in the aim of prevention of peat-bog fires, reduction of carbon oxide emission and preservation of biodiversity.
Main objectives:
1.Elaboration of scientific justification of the need of iterative restoration of hydrological regime and peatland ecosystems of the ?Ostrovskoe? raised bog
2.Elaboration of engineering plan of restoration of hydrological regime on the ?Ostrovskoe? bog
3. Implementation of engineering plan of restoration of hydrological regime on the ?Ostrovskoe? bog
4. Measurement and evaluation of the reduction of the CO2 emission after the waterlogging, made according to adopted in Europe methods
5. Elaboration and implementation of the monitoring of ground water level dynamic and of restoration of peat ecosystems on the bog in the aim of evaluation of the achievement of projected results
6. Development and approbation on 1 hectare?s area of the method of active bog restoration, which consists of spreading of vegetable material from natural bog to disturbed parts with following raising of water levels to the ground level
7. Printing of leaflets and posters in which the experience of restoration of Yelnia, Dokudovskoe and Ostrovskoe bogs will be summarized
5. Running of a final workshop about the generalization of outcomes from 3 SGP projects concerning the restoration of three bogs.
Key project outcomes:
1.Scientific justification of the need of restoration of hydrological regime and peat ecosystem on the ?Ostrovskoe? raised bog is elaborated.
2.Engineering plan of restoration of hydrological regime on the ?Ostrovskoe? bog is elaborated and implemented
3.Owing to adopted in Europe methods, the reduction of the CO2 emission from the depleted peat bog ?Ostrovskoe? is determined after the accomplished activities related to the restoration of the bog
4.Data about change of water level and state of bog ecosystems before and after the activities related to the restoration of hydrological regime of the raised bog are collected
5.The method of active sphagnum bog restoration is developed and tested
7. Leaflets and posters in which the experience of restoration of Yelnia, Dokudovskoe and Ostrovskoe bogs are summarized are printed
8. Final workshop about the generalization of outcomes from 3 SGP projects concerning the restoration of three bogs is held
