Conservation of Biodiversity through Improvement of Water Buffalo Farming in Kizilirmak Delta
The project aims to conserve the biodiversity of the Kizilirmak Delta, which is an Important Bird Area as well as a Key Biodiversity Area in Turkey. The area is significant in the number of waterfowl it provides habitat to. The are also has the largest population of naturally existing water buffalo's in Turkey, which are basically the most important factor in keeping the natural balance of the area by controlling the reedbeds. But the numbers of water buffalos are decreasing drastically, which is causing the area to be covered by reeds, not allowing enough space for the birds. The project aims to support the water buffalo farming via introducing added value to water buffalo products such as cream, mozzarrella, and sweets made from their milk and also raising awareness at the local level.
